Living Stone Kirkers,
I will be preaching at King's Church in Spokane Valley this Sunday and administering Jeremiah Jasso's ordination vows as he is installed as the pastor there. Pastor Josh will be continuing through Matthew here at Living Stone. The following Sunday, All Saints' Day, November 1, I will be giving a sermon insisting that to be biblically Reformed requires us to oppose abortion and laws like Prop 1. You may desire to apply blue face paint afterwards. We will also be having a Reformation Day Chili Extravaganza. Details below.
As we consider entering the season of feasting, what with Thanksgiving and Christmas looming, I want to give a word on how saints should view alcohol. The Bible requires us to not be drunk with wine but to be filled with the Spirit. While wine is given to us by God to gladden our hearts, it is all too often overlooked that it is also a clever cheat. It looks nice in the glass, but if you aren't mature it will turn into a serpent (Pro. 23:31-32). We must not be prudish when it comes to enjoying food and drink. But we must ever remember that such pleasures have a "top floor" and if we think to find in them everlasting pleasure we will be disappointed when the glass eventually empties. The cup of blessing, found in the Gospel of Jesus, leaves us with everlasting joy; the cup of wine can only bring momentary gladness, and if you're not paying attention it can actually bring a metric ton of troubles, woes, and consternation (Pro. 23:29).
It is an interesting tidbit of theological development in the Pentateuch that wine was not required of the sacrifices while the Israelites were in the wilderness, but only once they entered Canaan. In other words, there is an assumption there that right use of wine is necessarily tied to maturity. It takes time for wine to ferment, and in like manner, alcohol should only be partaken by those who have grown in spiritual maturity such that they recognize the danger of failing to be sober and vigilant in a time of spiritual warfare. All that to say, don't assume you are more mature with drink than you really are, and make sure your use of it really is biblical and in moderation.
Now, see below for a few announcements worth paying attention to. Have a wonderful weekend.
For His renown,
Pastor Ben
