Friday Note from Pastor Ben (10/30/26)

A Note from Pastor Ben — Living Stone Reformed Church

Living Stone Kirkers,

We're on the cusp of the penultimate month of the year. If you squint you can see the year 2027 from here. Lots of feasting and thanksgiving and gift-giving lies ahead. Make sure to get your generosity and hospitality muscles all limbered up.

Speaking of feasting, our monthly potluck will be this Sunday, All Saints' Day, November 1. We will have some games for the kids, beer (and root beer), and lots of chili. Invite some friends to come worship and feast and celebrate with us the great gift that God gave us in the Reformation.

This Sunday my sermon will be a celebration of the glorious doctrines which were recovered in the Reformation and contrasting that with the horrors of Prop 1. If you haven't made a plan to vote yet, please do so. And make sure you get everyone you know to vote against this proposition. On Monday evening we will be having a Psalm sing and prayer meeting asking the Lord to deliver us from this evil. Details below.

Now, a brief encouragement regarding how to think biblically about politics. The story of Jehu in the Bible is a striking one for a number of reasons. God raises Jehu up, and by Jehu's reforms much good is done. Although Jehu has a mixed report card when it comes to godliness and faithfulness, God still accomplishes the overthrow of greater evils by him. Our political arrangement is, of course, different than Israel in the 800s BC. However, the lesson here is that God is not uninvolved in our political processes, but is sovereignly ruling and intervening in them to direct the course to His ends. He uses peculiar means to accomplish those ends, at times. But make no mistake, His hand is behind all the ups and downs of all politics of all history. Take certainty in that as you head to the polls to vote like Christians who love the Law of the Lord as much as someone who found a winning lotto ticket (Ps. 119:162).

For His renown,

Pastor Ben
